Cultural groups that have a historical continuity with a region before its colonisation and who have lived largely independent or isolated from the influence of the larger nation state. These people have maintained at least in part their distinct linguistic, cultural and social/ organisational characteristics. Characteristics common across many Indigenous groups include reliance upon subsistence-based production and a predominantly non-urbanised society.
