Part of the operating budget, costs that vary with the level of production or sales, such as shipping supplies and sales commissions. These costs change in the same direction as, and in direct proportion to, changes in operating activity, for example, direct labor, direct materials and sales commissions. (See also fixed costs, mixed costs.)
